Local seafood gives Grand Cayman's kitchens a head start before they even turn on the stove. Conch, snapper, mahi, and lobster in season show up everywhere from barefoot beach bars serving ceviche to upscale rooms with a Caribbean view, and Italian, Asian fusion, steakhouse, and other international cuisines fill out the rest of a list that runs to more than 50 restaurants across the island. A lot of what lands on the plate was caught or harvested that morning, since several kitchens still source straight from Cayman farms and fishing boats.
Seven Mile Beach has the largest concentration of restaurants on the island, most of them built around sunset and ocean breeze. The strip runs from steakhouses like Seven to Italian rooms like LUCA and Ragazzi, casual spots like Sunshine Grill and Burger Shack, and beach bars such as Coccoloba Bar & Grill and Peppers Bar & Grill that double as dinner stops once the sun goes down. Blue by Eric Ripert, inside the Ritz-Carlton, is the closest thing the island has to a marquee fine-dining reservation, and it books up well ahead of a Friday or Saturday night in high season. George Town is where the island's longer-running local institutions sit, busy with the office crowd on weekdays and with cruise passengers whenever a ship is in port. Grand Old House, in a restored plantation house on the water, has been George Town's fine-dining fixture for years. Singh's Roti Shop and Lobster Pot anchor the more casual end, and The Brasserie runs its own fishing boat and a kitchen garden to keep its menu farm-to-table in more than name. On days when several cruise ships dock at once, the harborside restaurants along the George Town waterfront fill up fastest around the middle of the day, so a table is easier to find outside the usual lunch rush.
West Bay has some of the island's most established seafood addresses, most of them built around a marina view. Calypso Grill, above Morgan's Harbour, has been a local favorite for years and built a following around its sticky toffee pudding as much as its seafood. Morgan's Seafood sits on the same stretch of harbor, and Cracked Conch and Ristorante Pappagallo, the latter set around a lagoon with resident parrots, round out a corner of West Bay dining that draws a loyal local crowd more than a first-time visitor's itinerary.
The eastern and northern districts have far fewer restaurants than Seven Mile Beach, but several are worth the drive precisely because they are not built for tourist traffic. Vivine's Kitchen on the East End serves home-style Caribbean cooking, the kind of local spot that turns up on food blogs like Cayman Good Taste but sits ranked well down the general review aggregators' lists of the island's hundreds of restaurants. Tukka, also East End, builds its menu around whatever the local fishermen bring in that day. Further along, Caboose and Over the Edge cover North Side, and Kaibo Beach Restaurant is a big part of the reason people make the drive out to Cayman Kai at all. Camana Bay adds a smaller cluster in its walkable town center, including Abacus, Agua Restaurant & Lounge, and Yoshi Sushi, all reachable on foot from the Crescent without needing a car.
Most restaurants add a service charge close to 15% to the bill; it is standard practice rather than a government requirement, so look for a line item labeled gratuity or service charge before adding anything extra on top. Book ahead for dinner at sit-down places, especially between December and April, when the island's high season fills the waterfront tables first. Dress codes stay relaxed islandwide; even the nicer restaurants rarely ask for more than smart casual.
