About South Sound

South Sound runs along the coast east of George Town, following South Church Street and South Sound Road. It's one of the island's established neighbourhoods rather than a visitor district: houses and low-rise condos behind a sea wall, a community park, a couple of long-standing restaurants, and services aimed at the people who live there.

The barrier reef sits close to shore along this stretch, which keeps the water inside it calm and shallow and makes for good snorkelling on a settled day. Smith Barcadere, at the George Town end, is a small cove with parking and shade that locals use far more than visitors do. South Sound Community Park has playing fields and a playground, and Grand Old House, in a restored plantation house on the water, is the best known restaurant in the area.

The real appeal here is the commute: five to ten minutes into central George Town, with the road continuing east toward Red Bay, Prospect, and the rest of the island. Fewer businesses are listed in South Sound than in the commercial districts, so check nearby George Town listings alongside these.
