Grand Cayman punches well above its weight when it comes to food. For an island of roughly 70,000 people, the concentration of seriously good restaurants is impressive, and the quality of local seafood, snapper, conch, mahi, lobster in season, gives kitchens a head start before they even turn on the stove.
Most visitors gravitate toward Seven Mile Beach, where waterfront restaurants like Agua Restaurant & Lounge and Nova serve dinner with a side of Caribbean sunset. Agua does Italian-leaning seafood and handmade pasta on a deck over the water; Nova runs a small-plates menu that works well for sharing. Both are busy during high season, so book ahead. For a classic Cayman seafood experience, Calypso Grill in West Bay, tucked above Morgan’s Harbour, has been a local favourite for years. Their sticky toffee pudding has a following all its own.
In George Town, The Brasserie is the island’s farm-to-table standard-bearer. Much of the produce comes from their own garden, and the fish is caught by their own boat. Lunch draws the business crowd; dinner is quieter and worth it. Nearby, Bàcaro serves Venetian-style cicchetti and fresh pasta in a smart but unfussy room near the northern end of Seven Mile Beach. Their happy hour at the bar is one of the better deals on the island.
For something more casual, Sunshine Grill, tucked beside the pool at Sunshine Suites, does some of the best burgers on the island alongside fish tacos and cold beer. Caboose, on the waterfront near the George Town cruise terminal, is a good spot for conch fritters, cold drinks, and people-watching. On the East End, Tukka serves Australian-meets-Caribbean fare with an ocean view and a menu that changes with what the fishermen bring in.
Most restaurants add a 15% service charge to the bill, so check before tipping extra. Reservations are recommended for dinner at sit-down spots, especially December through April. Dress codes are generally relaxed; even the nicer places rarely require more than smart casual.
