CI$ and US$ converter

The Cayman dollar has been fixed at CI$1 = US$1.20 since 1974, so the maths is simple. The catch is at the till: most shops and restaurants convert US$ cash at CI$0.80 per US$1 rather than the exact 0.8333, which is a hidden 4% charge. Cards are billed in CI$ at the exact rate. This converter shows both.

Worth knowing

  • Prices on the island are quoted in CI$ unless marked. Menus that show US$ are usually aimed at cruise visitors.
  • Paying by card in CI$ avoids the shop-rate loss. ATMs at the airport and most bank branches dispense CI$; some dispense US$.
